No one wants to think about their check engine light coming on, but it happens to the best of us regardless of the age of our vehicle.  On many occasions this happens and the car is still operating just fine.  The check engine life is something that may come on when scheduled maintenance is due or it may be something more serious that is only going to create more problems if you continue to drive. You can take your vehicle to the repair shop where they will also have auto code readers, but the issue here is that it is going to cost you.  The scanner may only be hooked to your car for a minute or to but this could cost you as much as $150! It seems preposterous but this is how the shops make their money.  

When you have your own scanner you can get around this issue and if need be, you can bring your car in and tell them what needs to be done.  By scanning the vehicle yourself you may be able to find that you can make the repairs on your own, so you can avoid the repair shop altogether!
